What about Bobby Sands, exactly? The IRA won in the end, anyway. They even won that particular battle, in that Margaret Thatcher did eventually give their prisoners political status.
The Provisional Army Council has exercised de facto sovereignty over Northern Ireland for 21 years and counting, and will do so over all 32 Counties by the end of this year. They have won.
And they won the battle over political status even at the time. Thatcher just gave it to them eventually.
