Trick or Treat?

Going to Halloween events as David Lindsay, their faces ever so lightly, yet still discernibly, browned? Is that really how people who aspired to be the Labour parliamentary candidate here at North West Durham have been spending this weekend? Although they probably think that I do not know it, the last MP's staff did name their London pub quiz team after me, so why not? From what might politely be called the other wing of the party, this weekend's minstrels should be made to reprise the role at interview, with the successful applicant required to do so again on the stump.

Should a Labour candidate for this seat ever materialise, then I would have him or her beaten from the start on race. White? The candidate for people who just did not want a mixed-race MP. Black? A comical attempt to out-colour me. Somewhere in between? Some variation on either of those. Exactly my skin tone, with a name exactly as WASP-y as David Alexander Stephen Lindsay? A mere tribute act, the candidate who was as much like me as possible without being me. Any of those ways, I win. I am really, really, really going to enjoy this.

Missing The Bus No More

Having campaigned on this issue for many, many years, I warmly welcome the return of a direct bus service from Lanchester and Burnhope to Eldon Square and, after a very long hiatus, to the Metrocentre. Congratulations to all involved.

That it is a single, hourly service means that the complete journey will take about an hour and a half, but we can work on that. With enough of an effort, then we could bring back a bus every half an hour, alternately to Newcastle and to the Metrocentre, with each journey taking about an hour. Those were the days. They could be again.

The new service will not run late in the evenings, but nor did the old one. For the sake of connectivity, we now need to bring back the late buses out of Durham every evening, so that people getting off the trains from Newcastle could get home.

Councillors of Despair

The defection of Solihull's last two Labour Councillors, one to the Conservative administration and the other to the Greens who are notably the main opposition, has made it the only Metropolitan Borough in England with no Labour Councillors.

The only one, that is, for now. There is going to be a lot more of this after Super Thursday, when Labour's municipal base began to collapse, complete with the loss of seats, such as one here in Lanchester, that the party had picked up under Jeremy Corbyn. Had all seats been up everywhere on that day, then that collapse would have happened overnight. As it is, then it will take a bit longer. But under the calamitous Keir Starmer, it has already started.

For many Councillors, especially but not exclusively Labour, the allowance is either their only income apart from the state retirement pension, or it is their only income at all. For example, the basic allowance for a Durham County Councillor is £13,300. Being higher than the income tax threshold, that is more than 43 per cent of the adult population makes. Expect a lot of defections in various directions.

Clothed In White Raiment?

"Teenage bartenders ought not to address venerable elders as "mate"," I half-jokingly posted on Facebook a little over a week ago. And such is the power of social media that there now arrives an email addressed in all seriousness to "Venerable Elder David Lindsay".

From Britain to the United States, and from Africa to the Caribbean, the Black Church is particularly eager to venerate me, for some reason. In my time, I have also been addressed as "His Excellency Professor David Lindsay".

The contrast is stark with the liberal lay salariat that runs the Catholic Church in this country. That lot had two goes at trying to send me to prison for this book and because of their own symbiotic relationship with the right wing of the Labour Party in much of the country, including the North East.

They would no doubt have kept going until they had won, and they are beside themselves that I am still not dead. Upon my release, rumour already had it that a hit had been put on me in prison, but that the hitman had taken such a liking to me that he had given the money back. I do not know that that is not true.

"Venerable," you say? Well, that I never did become a second generation archdeacon is in fact tied up with the strange fate of either the first or the second person ever to have assumed mistakenly that I held a doctorate, and the first ever to have assumed mistakenly that I was ordained.

In either September or October 1996, and in one order or the other but I cannot remember which, I received a letter addressed to "Dr David Lindsay" from Jimmy Goldsmith, of all people, and a letter addressed to "The Reverend Dr David Lindsay" from a Reverend Doctor who, at almost exactly the same time, admitted me as an undergraduate for the next year at the Durham college of which he was Principal.

Sir James was corrected, although he continued the correspondence even once he knew that I was a 19-year-old barman who did not address venerable elders as "mate", but my other correspondent left both his position and this country very soon afterwards. To this day, I have never met him, so I can only assume that he thought that there were two David Lindsays at this address, presumably a father and son.

A former colleague of my late father's was made Acting Principal, but he had returned to being a Tutor by the time that I matriculated, so that although an old Army comrade of my father's was Senior Tutor (and, astonishingly, is still alive, and still active in several fields), and for that matter although the bishop whose archdeacon my father had been, who had married my parents and who had baptised me, was the oldest living Old Boy, it rapidly became clear that God had other plans for me than those which might have appeared obvious when I had first become a Son of Saint Chad, Great Bishop and Confessor.

Goldsmith is the only person without a doctorate ever to have assumed me to have held one, but people with their own have done it with remarkable frequency. For example, the Centre of Theology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham innocently listed me among its members as "Dr David Lindsay" until Oliver Kamm noticed and threw a hissy fit.

I corrected it, as I always do, and it was put right. Kammiknickers in a twist had been completely ignored on the subject, as was only right and proper. I have no idea why, but academically distinguished people read my work and just assume me to be a PhD. None of them has ever had that reaction to Kamm's effusions. Hey, ho.

As for the Reverend thing, an old lady from South Shields did once ask me, "Are you David Miliband, Father?" I explained that I was neither, and that it would have been impossible to have been both. Apart from that, though, the only people to have assumed me to have been ordained have themselves been ordained.

As with the Doctor thing, I am not, I have never claimed to be, and I have never attempted to be. Yet, among other things, I have had "Dear Father Lindsay" from bishops and from Vatican officials, both of whom one might have expected to have been in a position to check. I cannot begin to explain it, although, again, I do of course always correct it.

I might let "Dr Lindsay" go among my own people, variously conceived, if it were to arise spontaneously among them, in the manner of the late Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. It would wind up Kamm no end, and what is life for, if not for that? Other than that, I would tolerate objections to it only from people who would never have said or written either "Dr Paisley" or "Dr Angelou".

"We hand this woman, Margaret Thatcher, over to the Devil." "I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size." Dr Lindsay would be happy to give his most favourable peer review to that vintage Dr Angelou and to that vintage Dr Paisley, in that order. In the meantime, I make do with being His Excellency Professor David Lindsay. Or, even better, Venerable Elder David Lindsay.

Chris Grieve Watch: Day 15

I have never heard of you, and I was not in Durham that Thursday evening. Or any evening in that period. I was on a tag.

Why do people feel the need to suck up to Kamm like this?

This post will appear daily until you account for yourself.

Adam Langleben Watch: Day 15

Richard Holden Promotion Watch: Day 38

People have been in touch to ask why I never criticised Richard Holden. But I am highly critical of this Government, of which Richard is the strong supporter that he was elected to be. I like him, not that that has anything to do with politics. I like a lot of what he is doing, or trying to do. He is, however, a political opponent.

The reshuffle has put everything in place for a General Election in May 2023. Yet there is no sign of the name of a loyal, and obviously ambitious, former special adviser to several Cabinet Ministers.

Perhaps he has turned down offers? The alternative is that the composition of the Government is being determined by the Prime Minister's wife. Therefore, Richard needs to be asked the question. He may consider it asked here and now. And every day until further notice.

Labour Candidate Watch: Day 46

46 days after the Cabinet reshuffle that called a General Election for May 2023, there is still no Labour candidate at North West Durham, which in 2019 Labour lost for the first time and by only 1,144 votes.

By contrast, I have been a candidate for North West Durham at the next General Election since even before the last one, fighting to strengthen families and communities by securing economic equality and international peace through the democratic political control of the means to those ends, including national and parliamentary sovereignty. Contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com.

Or contact nwdclp.campaigns@gmail.com if you wanted permanent austerity at home, if you wanted forever war abroad, and if you did not want a mixed-race MP for this seat. This post will appear daily until someone had proven to be so pro-austerity, so pro-war, and so racist, that even the Labour Party was sufficiently impressed.

The Adrian Hilton Challenge: Day 85

Adrian Hilton, I had to Google you, and I still have little or no idea who you are, so when, exactly, have I ever "stalked" you at all, much less "for longer than [you] care to remember"?

This post will appear daily until further notice.

The Oliver Kamm Challenge: Day 85

Oliver Kamm, whose signature to this do you claim that I forged? Name the name.

Oliver Kamm, when, exactly, have I ever been found to have accused anyone of child abuse?

Oliver Kamm, when, exactly, have I ever called for anyone to be murdered?

And Oliver Kamm, since I am a declared and active candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham, are you? If not, why not?

I could go on at very great length, but these questions will do for now.

This post will appear daily until further notice.

The Representatives Challenge: Day 85

As already stated on the day after my release: "The instant that Labour lost control of Durham County Council, then I was granted an unsolicited tag for more than 10 weeks of future good behaviour. I invite each and every Member of Parliament for the area covered by Durham County Council, each and every member of Durham County Council, and each and every member of Lanchester Parish Council, to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if they thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know." The current total is zero.

Furthermore, I invite each and every other candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if they thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. In this case, names most certainly will be published, including as part of my election literature. The current total is zero. If that remained the case when the next General Election was called, then my literature would state that each and all of my opponents, by name, did not think that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me.

This post will appear daily until further notice.

The Clergy Challenge: Day 85

I invite each and every bishop, priest and deacon of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if he thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know. The current total is zero.

Since, as private citizens, none of them has resigned as a Patron of my parliamentary campaign at North West DurhamI invite each and all of the 12 archbishops and diocesan bishops of the Red Wall dioceses of Birmingham, Hallam, Hexham and Newcastle, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Nottingham, Salford, Shrewsbury, and Wrexham, to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if he thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know. The current total is zero.

And since none of them has resigned as a Patron of my parliamentary campaign at North West Durham, I invite each and all the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Franciscan Custos of the Holy Land, the Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem, the Ethiopian Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Maronite Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem and Palestine, the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, the Syrian Catholic Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem, and the Armenian Catholic Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem and Amman, to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if he thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know. The current total is zero.

The scandalous allegation against me on 2nd March 2020 was recanted under oath at Durham Crown Court on 11th of that month, calling gravely into question my convictions the next day by exposing that key character witness as unreliable, a fact that was not mentioned in closing statements or in summation. Unless, as is widely assumed, the real reason for them is the content of this book, then the sanctions imposed upon me in my absence on 2nd March 2020 are void. I had not received a written apology by 30th September 2021, nor was any such thing to be published in full in The Northern Cross.

Financially, I would then have settled for the reimbursement of my victim surcharges. One would not wish to have to sue the Church. But while I am not yet in a position to act on it, I must now declare my intention in principle to do so. And if I were to be defeated at the next General Election, then I would seek to have that result overturned in the courts on grounds of undue spiritual influence by the Safeguarding Office of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, naming all relevant persons in the court papers. It has come to this.

This post will appear daily until further notice.

Urbs in Rure?

Both Labour Councillors in Solihull have left the party. One has joined the Conservatives, while the other has joined the Greens. There is Labour's future, or lack of it, in microcosm.

But what of those of us who are neither Conservatives nor Greens? We need to be making our own arrangements. As some of us already are.

Playing Us For Fossil Fools

Glasgow has managed to conjure up an integrated transport system, but only for participants in COP26, and only while that lasts.

They are being wafted in as if Covid-19 did not exist, and several of them are simultaneously trying to talk OPEC into increasing fossil fuel production. Just not the fossil fuel on which this island stands.

By what authority is Greta Thunberg anything at all? Does she hold some kind of political office? If so, then which one, exactly? Or is she some kind of public intellectual? If so, then on what basis, exactly?

Rest In Power, Davey Ayre

Davey Ayre died today. One of my Campaign Patrons, he signed my nomination papers at the last General Election, and he attended my court hearings.

A legendary fighter, not least in the ultimately vindicated cause of the Shrewsbury 24, and lately in the cause of the County Durham Teaching Assistants, Davey must have been in his nineties.

His funeral is provisionally booked to take place at 1pm on Monday 15th November, at St Thomas’s Church, Stanley Crook.

One Year On

One year ago today, Jeremy Corbyn was suspended from the Labour whip. No other MP has resigned it in solidarity. Yet Labour's poll rating is lower than it was in the form of the 2019 General Election result, while Keir Starmer's net approval rating has gone from 15 per cent to minus 40, with the number saying that he looked like a Prime Minister having dropped from three percent to minus 45.

The Labour Party has never been more unsafe for Jews, who are being systematically purged on the orders of the same bodies that got up the anti-Corbyn hysteria, and which still feel it necessary to peddle the claim that he was somehow anti-Semitic. Jews in the Labour Party are at wildly disproportionate risk of being accused of anti-Semitism, and that accusation is considered its own proof.

Yet the whole anti-Semitism business has been blown apart by the transition from open secret to openly stated fact in the case of Greville Janner. Although his proclivities have been common knowledge for 70 years, Janner controlled the Board of Deputies for most of his life, and it is still run by people who owe their positions to his patronage.

That influence fans out through and as the Jewish Leadership Council, the Community Security Trust, the Campaign Against Antisemitism, or any of that crowd, including the official Jewish media, including the Israeli Embassy, including the Jewish Labour Movement and Labour Friends of Israel, and including at least two of Janner's children.

Part of the Leicester machine of Sir Mark Henig, Janner handed over his Commons seat to Patricia Hewitt of the Paedophile Information Exchange, who had banned the use of the word "equality" by platform speakers at Labour Party Conferences. The Hard Rights of both main parties, and the Cyril Smith wing that is dominant in economic policy terms within the Liberal Democrats, are so shot through with the sexual abuse of children that they are more or less defined by it.

And like illegal drug use, sexual behaviour is never purely "private". Both of them open up the participants to the blackmail that is fundamental to political power in this country. Moreover, the intellectual contortions necessary to justify them in the minds of those participants have vast philosophical and political consequences, taking those minds from a broadly Conservative or Labour position to an explicitly Thatcherite or Blairite one.

Intentionally or otherwise, and for all his faults, Corbyn threatened to destroy that Blairite lifestyle by creating an economic order in which no one would have felt the need to become a drug mule, or a rent boy, or anything like that. Therefore terrified of economic equality, such lifestyle liberals as the Equality and Human Rights Commission, which also had and has close ties to Janner's official circle, turned on Corbyn as no one had turned on any other British politician in living memory. And here we are.

If you doubt that "Labour anti-Semitism" was and is a hoax, then look no further than the fact that that is denied by Oliver Kamm. Usually keen to refer to his background in Leicester, Kamm has said nothing about Janner, whom he must have known from childhood. Nor about the lynching of Claudia Webbe. Nor about the fact that Keith Vaz had continued to maintain two staffed offices in Leicester East, paid for by person or persons unknown.

As Jacob Rees-Mogg confirmed yesterday, Vaz's suspension expired at the end of the last Parliament. Vaz was much in evidence at last month's Labour Party Conference. If Webbe were sent to prison for a single count of harassment without violence, then that could only be in order to force a by-election. We must pull out all the stops to secure the election of George Galloway.

Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Ed Miliband and Starmer would all then have had to face George as a non-Labour MP, and Blair, Miliband and Starmer would each have lost a seat to him. Meanwhile, if the Conservative candidate at Southend West were a supporter of drug legalisation, and that is probably going to be the case, then Peter Hitchens ought instead to be elected there.

Replacement Therapy

Carolyn Harris's constituents in Swansea East have not paid prescription charges on HRT or anything else since as long ago as 2007. They were also abolished in Northern Ireland in 2010, and in Scotland in 2011.

So why are still paying them in England? They raise a mere half of one per cent of the budget of our NHS, which would hardly be a difficult sum to make up. Get rid of them.

Conversion Excursion

What, exactly, is "conversion therapy"? Most lesbians and gay men had heterosexual experiences in adolescence, and sometimes well after that, before deciding that it was not for them. Why should there be either a cultural taboo around articulating the reverse experience, or a legal sanction for cooperating in someone else's?

Ignore hysteria about things like electroconvulsion, as if they were still going on in this day and age. And if conversion therapy is, as Liz Truss put it, "abhorrent", then what about the drastic and irreversible psychological, chemical and surgical aspects of so-called sex changes, which are a vast array of medical treatment for something that is supposedly not an illness at all?

In this case, names most certainly will be published, including as part of my election literature. The current total is zero. The Clergy Challenge: Day 83

A Hitch In Time

Peter Hitchens attains his threescore years and ten today.

Gore Vidal named Christopher Hitchens as his "dauphin or delfino", and proceeded to outlive him.

In that case, perhaps it is just as well that Peter Hitchens has no heir apparent, or even presumptive.

But such is in fact the case. He has no successor.

Burning Issue

COP26. Clue's in the name. They have tried this 25 times already. The first one was in 1995, eight years before Greta Thunberg was born, but the world has yet to turn to dust and ash.

Climate change is real. It always has been, and it always will be. The trick is to learn to live with it. That does not involve reversing the progress of the past. Quite the reverse, in fact.

Richard Holden Promotion Watch: Day 35

Labour Candidate Watch: Day 43

43 days after the Cabinet reshuffle that called a General Election for May 2023, there is still no Labour candidate at North West Durham, which in 2019 Labour lost for the first time and by only 1,144 votes.

The Adrian Hilton Challenge: Day 82

Adrian Hilton, I had to Google you, and I still have little or no idea who you are, so when, exactly, have I ever "stalked" you at all, much less "for longer than [you] care to remember"?

This post will appear daily until further notice.

The Oliver Kamm Challenge: Day 82

Oliver Kamm, whose signature to this do you claim that I forged? Name the name.

Oliver Kamm, when, exactly, have I ever been found to have accused anyone of child abuse?

Oliver Kamm, when, exactly, have I ever called for anyone to be murdered?

And Oliver Kamm, since I am a declared and active candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham, are you? If not, why not?

I could go on at very great length, but these questions will do for now.

This post will appear daily until further notice.

Still Flying Somewhere

Over, and over, and over again, Rishi Sunak talked about "taxpayers' money", all the while announcing policies that depended on his perfectly correct understanding that there was in fact no such thing.

All that, and Tory Boy boilerplate about the Red Ensign and what have you. In both categories is Richard Holden's cut in the duty on draught beer, a very welcome move and a hugely popular one. Sunak wants to be Prime Minister even more than Gordon Brown did.

And would there have been a real terms increase for every Department under Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves? That question answers itself. Any remaining Thatcherites should vote Labour.

The Pits

2015 was the only one of the last five General Elections at which I have voted Labour. 2005, Watts Stelling, because I could not possibly have voted for Hilary Armstrong after Iraq. 2010, the same, this time because of Labour's all-women shortlist, although I accept that it spared this seat a nine-year nightmare. 2017, Owen Temple, because of the Teaching Assistants. 2019, myself. But 2015, Labour.

Ed Miliband was catastrophically wrong about Libya, but he was not in government at the time, and he would undeniably have been a better Prime Minister than any of the three people who held that office between 2015 and 2020. Yet standing in for Keir Starmer today, Miliband recanted the commitment to coal that he gave to a six figure crowd at the 2012 Durham Miners' Gala.

Boris Johnson did the "paymasters" thing at Prime Minister's Questions, but in fact the unions give less and less to the Labour Party, which is why it has gone from healthy solvency under Jeremy Corbyn to near-bankruptcy today. Separately, Starmer does have paymasters, and they are exactly as savoury as the ones who paid for Johnson's gold wallpaper. Sadly, even Miliband is now beholden to them.

Main Objective

It is impossible for Test and Trace to have cost £37 billion.

This has been corruption on a scale without precedent.

Intelligence Received

MI5 admits that Salman Abedi could have been stopped, and says that he was probably radicalised by his father.

It will not say whether or not his father was part of the terrorist organisation of which Manchester was made the world centre by MI6.

That's a yes, then.

To End This Spiritual Catastrophe

Some people make bad puns on the word “woke” while all of this happens on their watch. Other people are Tariq Ali, from whose Facebook page I got this, and Cornel West:

From Cornel West, who defends Western classics as he condemns Howard University’s decision to abolish teaching the Western Canon.

“Upon learning to read while enslaved, Frederick Douglass began his great journey of emancipation, as such journeys always begin, in the mind. Defying unjust laws, he read in secret, empowered by the wisdom of contemporaries and classics alike to think as a free man. Douglass risked mockery, abuse, beating and even death to study the likes of Socrates, Cato and Cicero.

“Long after Douglass’s encounters with these ancient thinkers, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. would be similarly galvanized by his reading in the classics as a young seminarian — he mentions Socrates three times in his 1963 “Letter From Birmingham Jail.”

“Yet today, one of America’s greatest Black institutions, Howard University, is diminishing the light of wisdom and truth that inspired Douglass, King and countless other freedom fighters.

“Amid a move for educational “prioritization,” Howard University is dissolving its classics department. Tenured faculty will be dispersed to other departments, where their courses can still be taught. But the university has sent a disturbing message by abolishing the department.

“Academia’s continual campaign to disregard or neglect the classics is a sign of spiritual decay, moral decline and a deep intellectual narrowness running amok in American culture. Those who commit this terrible act treat Western civilization as either irrelevant and not worthy of prioritization or as harmful and worthy only of condemnation.

“Sadly, in our culture’s conception, the crimes of the West have become so central that it’s hard to keep track of the best of the West. We must be vigilant and draw the distinction between Western civilization and philosophy on the one hand, and Western crimes on the other. The crimes spring from certain philosophies and certain aspects of the civilization, not all of them.

“The Western canon is, more than anything, a conversation among great thinkers over generations that grows richer the more we add our own voices and the excellence of voices from Africa, Asia, Latin America and everywhere else in the world. We should never cancel voices in this conversation, whether that voice is Homer or students at Howard University.

“For this is no ordinary discussion. The Western canon is an extended dialogue among the crème de la crème of our civilization about the most fundamental questions. It is about asking “What kind of creatures are we?” no matter what context we find ourselves in. It is about living more intensely, more critically, more compassionately. It is about learning to attend to the things that matter and turning our attention away from what is superficial.

“Howard University is not removing its classics department in isolation. This is the result of a massive failure across the nation in “schooling,” which is now nothing more than the acquisition of skills, the acquisition of labels and the acquisition of jargon.

“Schooling is not education. Education draws out the uniqueness of people to be all that they can be in the light of their irreducible singularity. It is the maturation and cultivation of spiritually intact and morally equipped human beings. The removal of the classics is a sign that we, as a culture, have embraced from the youngest age utilitarian schooling at the expense of soul-forming education.

“To end this spiritual catastrophe, we must restore true education, mobilizing all of the intellectual and moral resources we can to create human beings of courage, vision and civic virtue.

“Students must be challenged: Can they face texts from the greatest thinkers that force them to radically call into question their presuppositions? Can they come to terms with the antecedent conditions and circumstances they live in but didn’t create? Can they confront the fact that human existence is not easily divided into good and evil, but filled with complexity, nuance and ambiguity?

“This classical approach is united to the Black experience. It recognizes that the end and aim of education is really the anthem of Black people, which is to lift every voice. That means to find your voice, not an echo or an imitation of others. But you can’t find your voice without being grounded in tradition, grounded in legacies, grounded in heritages.

“As German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer emphasized in the past century, traditions are inescapable and unavoidable. It is a question not of whether you are going to work in a tradition, but which one. Even the choice of no tradition leaves people ignorantly beholden within a language they didn’t create and frameworks they don’t understand.

“Engaging with the classics and with our civilizational heritage is the means to finding our true voice. It is how we become our full selves, spiritually free and morally great.”

Pro Vita Sua

Professor Michael Bentley is only doing his job, and no doubt he already purveys Newmanscepticism to specialist academics. But if that were enough for him, then he would not have written this article. Still, it is going to have to be enough for him.

There may also be a subgenre of Protestant fundamentalist material that attacked Saint John Henry Newman, but beyond that and Professor Bentley's existing readers, then books about him are bought almost exclusively by people who already prayed to him.

There is no other remotely modern British figure of any importance of whom that can be said, that pretty much the only people who even wanted to read about him already literally had a religious devotion to him, but that is way that it is with Newman.

And there are enough of us to keep the thriving Newman industry in rude health until the End of Days, even though, or perhaps because, it really only publishes the same book over and over again. We like that book. No one ever lost money on it, and no one ever will.

Since there would be no conceivable commercial market for anything more revisionist, then no one would ever publish it. Hence Professor Bentley's keenness on Manning. But while there is no shame in being Marlowe, or Salieri, or McCartney, it is not being Shakespeare, or Mozart, or Lennon.

Historians like Manning, because they could write critical books on him and anyone would buy them, meaning that anyone would publish them. But those buyers would be, and are, us Newmaniacs. We are happy to read about Manning in such terms, because he was an enemy of Newman's.

While Manning's role in the London Dock Strike merits attention, he is otherwise notable only in relation to Newman. All of Newman's once-mighty opponents are like that. Most are forgotten, and if it were not for having been the villain who prompted the composition of Apologia Pro Vita Sua, then even a figure as towering as Kingsley once was would now be remembered for nothing more than The Water-Babies.

At 73, Professor Bentley is a bit long in the tooth to want to make the move from distinguished academic to influencer of upper-middlebrow opinion. If that is indeed his intention, then he needs to stay away from Newman, because, quite simply, no one is ever going to want to know.

The scandalous allegation against me on 2nd March 2020 was recanted under oath at Durham Crown Court on 11th of that month, calling gravely into question my convictions the next day by exposing that key character witness as unreliable, a fact that was not mentioned in closing statements or in summation.

Friday Night Lights

This is the best television that you have probably never seen.

Last night was a good night. I finished Friday Night Lights. My tag came off, two days before I had expected.

And I found out that the way to get on in the Labour Party in County Durham was to pretend to have been one of my victims, something that none of the 57 official ones claims to have been. Ask them.

Something In The Water?

Thanks to the House of Lords, and specifically the Duke of Wellington, there has been a partial victory over the dumping of raw sewage.

But would the Labour Party, of which it may surprise you to learn that His Grace was not a member, renationalise water, as even the majority of Conservative supporters had long favoured?

Well, there you are, then.
