In Black And White

As despicable as Mike Ashley is, it is horrifying that Newcastle United Football Club might be acquired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has one of the worst human rights records on earth. Its treatment of women is horrific. Its war on Yemen is the cause of the gravest humanitarian crisis in the world today.

Jews, of whom there are many on Tyneside, are not permitted to enter Saudi Arabia. Homosexual acts are punishable by death, as is conversion to Christianity.

Saudi Arabia engages in piracy against the Premier League, making it the only country where Premier League football can be watched only by illegal means.

It is the global centre of Islamist terrorism, funding and directing attacks right here on the streets of Britain.

Its ownership of Newcastle United would make the club and the city a target for all of its enemies, many of whom are violent in the extreme.

And the collapse in the price of oil means that Saudi Arabia is very probably no longer good for the money to buy Newcastle United or anything else, anyway.
