Imagine them doing this together, the Labour Councillor and the Tory Councillor (officially Conservative or not) for the same country town. That would be normal, even expected.
It is very London, this reaction. Or perhaps, these days, it is very urban in general. And things are especially bitter between the parties in Kensington and Chelsea. But then, Labour is now very urban in general, and very London in particular.
Plus the Labour Right is viciously sectarian because it has to justify, even to itself, why it is not on the other side. It is wildly unlikely that a Labour Group Whip on a local council is a "Corbynista", or anything like that.
Local government is the black heart and lost soul of the Labour Right, which is why the devastation of the Labour municipal base next year will be the ruination of the faction that once again controls the party. I can hardly wait.
Between now and then, though, perhaps this is indeed the new normal. The Labour Party is finished.
