Lost Under The Second Wave

This weekend, the Government will announce the second wave. It will not use those words, but it cannot not know that that will be the effect. Yet it remains in office, and it will remain in office, because the nominal Leader of the Opposition has been demanding an "exit strategy" from Day One.

He has been doing so for the sake of his corporate sponsors, even when, as is really still the case, the only Conservative opponents of the lockdown were a handful of MPs on the loony libertarian fringe. Boris Johnson could have seen them off.

But a pincer movement between them and the Opposition front bench is something else. Keir Starmer has bad relations with the North, with the working class, with BAME communities, and with the disabled. His solution seems to be just to kill us all off.

Whatever happened to health and safety at work, which is already the law? Millions of people are going to ordered back to just about the most unhealthy and unsafe workplaces imaginable. Yet the furlough scheme already proceeds on the understanding that the issuing of currency is an act of the State, which is literally the creator of all money.

A sovereign state with its own free floating, fiat currency has as much of that currency as it chooses to issue to itself. The State also has the fiscal and monetary means to control inflation, means that therefore need to be under democratic political control in both cases.

We already know for a fact that Anneliese Dodds does not understand a word of this, and we can only assume the same about Starmer, since he has failed to make the case for the Universal Basic Income, even though he would have been pushing at an open door at that stage.

The lockdown remains hugely popular, and more so here than anywhere else in Europe. Of course, we have had more deaths here than anywhere else in Europe. But anarcho-capitalist cranks have enormously amplified voices, as neoconservative cranks used to have. They use much the same amplifiers, and some of them are even the same people. The people who are back running the Labour Party.
