The MMT Blues?

The astonishing tax and spending proposals of the candidates to lead the Conservative Party would seem to suggest, either that they had already come round to Modern Monetary Theory, or that they very soon would once they were all in office in a few weeks' time. It is impossible to see how else they could begin to go about reducing taxation quite so drastically while increasing expenditure quite so exponentially.

In a similar vein, the mere one in eight people who recently voted either for the Conservative Party or for Change UK are the only people in this country who still believe that there has been any kind of economic success over the last 40 years, and they are therefore the only people who would not necessarily welcome the Universal Basic Income from the very beginning. Of course, within a few weeks of its introduction, then the remaining eighth would also be all ready to riot in the streets if anyone ever suggested taking it away from them.

There would still be a bit of Conservative resistance, if not to awfully much effect, and there would be a rather more serious rearguard action within the Parliamentary Labour Party. Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party will be registered before House of Commons rises for the summer recess, even if I have to pay for it myself, ongoing lawfare or no ongoing lawfare.

And I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham even if I can raise only the deposit, which I could do by going pretty overdrawn, although that was not how I was brought up. I would still prefer to raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign, but I am no longer making my candidacy conditional on having done so. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
