Speaking for most of us, so said Jeremy Corbyn about the fact that he had never taken any illegal drug. By contrast, who cares about the tax policies of a couple of old junkies?
If you were to assemble 11 people at random in this country, then it would simply not be the case that eight of them would have taken illegal drugs, that three would have taken Class A drugs, that two would have taken cocaine, and that at least one would have done so repeatedly when well into adult life.
For that to be representative, then, with 66 million people in this country, 48 million would have had to have taken illegal drugs, 18 million would have had to have taken Class A drugs, 12 million would have had to have taken cocaine, and at least six million would have had to have done so repeatedly when well into adult life.
No, of course these eight people could not now gain admission to the United States. And yes, of course they must all have lied in the course of the vetting process for Ministerial office. Alas, though, the Parliamentary Labour Party is also heavy with people who think that this is all normal to the point of universality.
Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party will be registered before House of Commons rises for the summer recess, even if I have to pay for it myself, ongoing lawfare or no ongoing lawfare.
And I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham even if I can raise only the deposit, which I could do by going pretty overdrawn, although that was not how I was brought up. I would still prefer to raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign, but I am no longer making my candidacy conditional on having done so. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
