Seconds Out

If it took mere hours in November 1990, then it would take mere seconds in November 2018.

Within hours of the fall of Margaret Thatcher, the people who had devised and implemented the Poll Tax had disowned it. Ever thereafter, they have denied all knowledge of it.

And within seconds of the fall of Theresa May, the people who had devised and implemented Universal Credit would have disowned it. Ever thereafter, they would deny all knowledge of it.

Once again, everyone would pretend that it had been about "Europe". But once again, that would have been nothing more than one of the Conservative Party's many strokes of luck.
