Pope Francis is no fool.
He chose to take on his critics over capital punishment, secure in the knowledge that the only country where the Church's opposition to it was not already a given was the country where the hierarchy was about to collapse over child abuse.
Any distinction between those critics and that hierarchy will be lost on almost anyone, and is being lost on almost everyone.
