Benefit?

I do not know why landlords are so opposed to Housing Benefit tenants, an absolutely guaranteed source of income that does not even pass through the tenant, but which goes straight to the landlord from the Council.

But my friend Paul Warren proposes an alternative.

Stop accepting new Housing Benefit claims. Create a Mortgage Benefit with an automatic entitlement of £100 per week. Have the Bank of England offer mortgages at £100 per week on qualifying properties, with no deposit.

Start a new State-owned company to build qualifying prefabricated housing. And require each local authority to provide a quota of new housing plots, based on population density.

"This way," says Paul, "good landlords will retain their tenants but land investments will gently deflate."

Any thoughts?
