The first St Helenian to captain the RMS St Helena, he had the MBE to prove it.
The flags in St Helena are flying at half-mast, by order of the Governor, whose residence, Plantation House, is shown here.
He was the youngest of eight siblings, yet he is the first one to go.
Their mother, my grandmother, is still alive.
