Don't Waste Your Tiers

Labour is to abstain on the tiers tomorrow.

It also looks set to abstain on the Brexit deal, although in that case probably with sizeable rebellions on both sides.

Do for the Labour Party what it does for you. Labour abstains for you. Abstain for Labour.

Or make your own arrangements. I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Public Inquiry

This Government needs the DUP for something.

Maybe something Covid-related. Maybe something Brexit-related. Maybe something else. But certainly something.

You see, while a public inquiry into the death of Pat Finucane has been ruled out for now, it has not been ruled out forever.

This Government needs the DUP for something. But what, exactly?

Happy Saint Andrew's Day

Average incomes in Scotland are 100 per cent of the United Kingdom average, and the average age is 40.

When it came down to it, then that middle-class, middle-aged country is never going to vote to put its mortgages or its pension schemes into an informal currency comparable to the use of the United States dollar by Panama, of all places.

There are more pressing matters than another referendum on Scottish independence. But there would be nothing to fear from one.

The Holden-Nut Nuts Challenge: Day One

Richard Holden, Princess Nut Nuts testified against you at the trial at which you were acquitted, and since your election she has repeatedly blocked your promotion.

So why do you want the country to be run by her? This question will appear here every day until you have answered it. I am the declared and active Independent candidate for North West Durham.

Peter Mandelson Is Right

The EHRC has no business deciding who may or may not be a member of a political party.

But in calling for its recommendations not to be implemented in full, then Peter Mandelson has gone further than Jeremy Corbyn ever did.

At the very least, why does His Lordship still have the whip?

The Labour Party's rules are for the Left. They have never applied to the Right. Not even under Corbyn. Much less now.

I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Oliver Kamm Candidacy Watch: Day Six

Oliver Kamm, you consider that Richard Holden, Laura Pidcock and I are all unfit to be Members of Parliament.

In that case, then you need to announce your own parliamentary candidacy here at North West Durham.

Put up or shut up. This post will appear daily until you do.

The Pidcock-Starmer Challenge: Day 15

Election to the National Executive Committee at Stage One is the stuff of Labour royalty, and 824 of Laura Pidcock's voters expressed no other preference.

Add quite that level of popularity within the party to the fact that she still lives here in North West Durham, and to the fact that she lost this seat by only 1,144 votes last year.

All in all, she is already the Labour candidate for North West Durham at the General Election of 2024. There is a certain amount of paperwork to be done, but it is nothing more than that.

Any Labour candidate at that Election will either believe that Keir Starmer ought to become Prime Minister, or will at least be pretending to believe that.

Laura is not the pretending type, so the question is this: Laura Pidcock, why do you want Keir Starmer to become Prime Minister?

Not, "Why do you want a Labour Government?" Why do you want Keir Starmer to become Prime Minister?

This question will appear here every day until you have answered it.

I am the declared and active Independent candidate for North West Durham.

Suicide Watch: Day 37

The two of you who are planning to drag me back to court, the Crown has been granted an adjournment because you have no case. And I am still here. What you really want is for me to commit suicide, which strongly suggests that you have been successful in that regard in the past. One of you has already spent nearly 20 years trying to bring about my death by my own hand. Every time that either of you sends the Police round, or what have you, then that is the intention.

But that will never be the effect. You have met your match in me, and you need to remember that while I am not permitted to name you here, you would be named in court if you pursued me there. You would be named in court as having tried to drive a man to suicide. Would that be good for business? Would that be good for political advancement? Would the Church see that as good for the Church? Think on.

This post will appear daily while you continued your doomed campaign to force me to take my own life. Each of you has clearly succeeded in forcing other people to take their own lives. But I say again, to each and both of you, that you have met your match in me. As one of you ought to have worked out a long time ago.

CPS Watch: Day 37

Keir Starmer's Crown Prosecution Service does not deny that it is an enforcement agency of the right-wing Labour machine, and that its behaviour towards me at every point has proved that conclusively, as that behaviour continues to do.

The CPS does not deny that it corrupted the jury at my trial, and that it would do the same to any jury, or to any bench of magistrates, that might try me in future. If I were ever to be convicted of anything again, then that point would be proved.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Max Hill, does not dispute that he knows me to be innocent of the offences with which he has charged me.

His predecessor, Alison Saunders, does not dispute that she has always known me to have been innocent of the offences with which she charged me and arranged to have me convicted.

Saunders, Hill and the CPS do not dispute that they have persecuted me, and that they continue to do so, purely in order to advance their professional, political and social lives on and around the right wing of the Labour Party.

And Saunders, Hill and the CPS do not dispute that, since I am nothing special, they are certainly doing this to dozens of other people at any given time.

This post will appear daily until there is any change in the above circumstances. I am a declared and active candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election.

My imprisonment prior to the next General Election would make me the First Past the Post, just as my conviction prior to the last one would have saved my deposit. My enemies need to think on.

Clergy Watch: Day 56

On 4th November, at Peterlee Magistrates' Court, you could not after all come along and witness the latest instalment in the lawfare against me by the right-wing Labour machine, including under it Sunday name. That same Court had granted the Crown an adjournment because it had had no case.

Nevertheless, are you a bishop, priest or deacon of the Roman Obedience who is ministering in any of the Red Wall areas: the three Northern regions, the two Midland regions, and North Wales? (Why that matters will become evident from an emerging project.)

If so, then do you believe that I am guilty of the charges against me, meaning that my accusers are telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com to say so. No names will be used, but a running total will appear here every day.

The current total is zero. There is no bishop, priest or deacon of the Roman Obedience who is ministering in the North of England, the Midlands, or North Wales, and who believes my accusers to be anything other than liars.

Meanwhile, the Patrons of my parliamentary campaign at North West Durham now include, as private citizens, the 12 archbishops and diocesan bishops of the Red Wall dioceses of Birmingham, Hallam, Hexham and Newcastle, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Nottingham, Salford, Shrewsbury, and Wrexham, together with the clergy of the Escomb and Pontop Partnerships, each of which falls partly in the North West Durham constituency.

Oliver Kamm Arrest Watch: Day 116

There is more evidence to arrest Oliver Kamm than there was to convict me, and he clams up over on Guido Fawkes when asked whether or not he has been arrested. So, has Oliver Kamm been arrested? If not, why not?

Kamm faked a death threat against himself, and he used a contact at Durham, who ought also to be arrested and who may in fact have been so, to try and pin it on me. That incident is so similar to the one of which I was convicted as to call into question my conviction. A daily update will appear here until further notice.

Oliver Kamm Libel Watch: Day 147

Oliver Kamm, you are a liar, and as such you are unfit to hold your position on The Times.

Sue me.

Your bizarre CapX article, as well as numerous other statements of yours since then, have had nothing to do with the substance of my previous court case, in relation to which I maintain my innocence. So they have not already been tested in court. And they are lies.

You made up the "anti-Semitic death threat" against yourself, in a language that I could not read, and even though you are not Jewish. I was present when the Police literally laughed it out.

Like me, the Police know how you did it; they know who in Durham you used, and so do I. Eventually, you will either do time for this, or it will see you sent to a psychiatric institution, possibly both.

You are a stalker with an acknowledged history of mental illness, and I can see less and less reason why I ought not to move to have you committed. Or sent to prison. By the criteria that were used to convict me, then that would be an open and shut case.

Next time that you try and frame someone, then do not use a language, and even a script, that your target cannot read. The Police tend to laugh out that kind of thing.

Oliver Kamm, you are a liar, and as such you are unfit to hold your position on The Times. Sue me. This post will appear here daily until you do.

Sunday 29 November 2020

Up Against It

Whatever it is, they are against it. From space exploration, to a new rail link between Consett and Tyneside, the Labour Party is against it. Labour is the bitter 60-year-old in the pub, when the pub is open, already counting the days until retirement, although not even looking forward to that very much.

Dehenna Davison and Richard Holden have got the number of that Blair intake generation of Labour MPs, grasping for another three thousand pounds on top of their already enormous salaries for their last four years, but with no possibility that that might make them any less disagreeable.

And who is going to replace them? If a seat returned a Labour MP last year, then it really is safe, and today the Labour Party blithely announced that the five-year ban on people who had supported, or even been, candidates against it would not apply to those who might claim to have left it because of "anti-Semitism".

So people who stood against Labour at a General Election not yet a year ago are going to be imposed as Labour candidates for safe seats at the next General Election, once last minute peerages and payouts had been doled out to any and every old misery guts.

Meanwhile, thousands more expulsions and suspensions are openly being planned by these entryists, led as they are by a man who could not have been a member of any political party as recently as eight years ago. I am the Independent candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Solidarity

On this International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Keir Starmer promises to readmit to the Labour Party those who had stood against it at a General Election not yet a year ago because it was not then sufficiently anti-Palestinian for them.

It is wrong to tell Israelis to “go home” when the State of Israel was founded in the year that the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. The Oxford English Dictionary sufficiently defines anti-Semitism as “Hostility to or prejudice against Jews”.

The IHRA Definition is a denial of BAME, migrant and refugee experience redolent of the Windrush scandal and of the fire at Grenfell Tower. It imports the New York practice of branding as “anti-Semitic” any uppity black or other challenge to the metropolitan liberal elite. It establishes a hierarchy of race.

It has led to the expulsion of Jackie Walker, Marc Wadsworth and Tony Greenstein, anti-racist activists of many decades’ service who had been party members in good standing even under Blair. Thousands more expulsions and suspensions are openly being planned by the entryists, led by a man who could not have been a member of any political party eight years ago. Say it again that the Labour Party is about to readmit people who stood against it at last December’s General Election.

One’s attitude towards the Palestinian struggle is the test of one’s attitude towards the specific phenomenon of white violence against people of colour throughout the world, including in Britain. Labour has failed that test since 4th September 2018. It would now be expulsionable from the Labour Party to criticise an Israeli nuclear attack on Britain. The defeat of Starmer’s Labour Party is the principal Palestinian political objective outside the Middle East, and the principal anti-racist political objective in the Global North.

Nor should conservatives view this as private grief. In curtailing criticism of a foreign state, the IHRA Definition is incompatible with national sovereignty. The denial of the ancient indigenous Christian presence in the Holy Land, where it created modern Palestinian identity, contributes significantly to the worldwide persecution of Christians. The Palestinian Christians’ ancestors predated the Israelite Conquest, they founded Jerusalem, and they became Christian when or before the Roman Empire did.

That is why I am honoured that the Campaign Patrons of my Independent candidacy for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham now include the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Franciscan Custos of the Holy Land, the Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem, the Ethiopian Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Maronite Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem and Palestine, the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, the Syrian Catholic Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem, and the Armenian Catholic Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem and Amman. What are you doing?

By Far The Biggest Story

It is now a year since I travelled to a safe house in a major European capital in search of the alarming story of how a key report had been sexed up to excuse a missile attack on Syria by Britain, the USA and France.

The censored report removed vital material strongly suggesting that there had, in fact, not been a gas attack on Douma, the pretext for the missile raid. This was by far the biggest story I have handled in more than 40 years of journalism. It is absolutely true.

But, with a very few honourable exceptions, British journalists have not followed it up. Instead several of them have joined in failed attempts to discredit me or my sources. The latest is a BBC reporter called Chloe Hadjimatheou, who recently made a Radio 4 programme The Canister On The Bed. There is much that is questionable in it.

But worst is a segment in which she insinuates that ‘Alex’, a whistleblower in the poison gas watchdog, the OPCW, may have been persuaded to go public about his doubts by the offer of a $100,000 reward from WikiLeaks. I have checked (as the BBC apparently did not) with WikiLeaks, who state no such payment was made.

Ms Hadjimatheou also suggested Alex ‘believed the attack was staged, and he thought the evidence bore that out’. This is simply untrue. ‘Alex’ is wholly apolitical, a serious scientist who deals in the proven, not in wild conspiracy claims. I challenged the BBC on both these matters.

Ms Hadjimatheou said she was too busy to reply. But a bureaucrat said this behaviour ‘meets the BBC’s editorial standards’. Well, do you know, I tend to agree with them. A reputation built up over a century is disappearing with amazing speed.

Oliver Kamm Candidacy Watch: Day Five

Oliver Kamm, you consider that Richard Holden, Laura Pidcock and I are all unfit to be Members of Parliament.

In that case, then you need to announce your own parliamentary candidacy here at North West Durham.

Woe On The Wear

He was regularly seen in the pubs there when they were open, so it is no secret that Richard Holden's constituency home is in Wolsingham. Wolsingham is like Emmerdale. It is downright laughable to suggest that he is at greater risk of contracting Covid-19 when he is there than when he is in London.

I always said that no good would come of unitary local government in County Durham. And the impossibility of separating out the London Boroughs is not a reason to put the whole of London into Tier Two, but a reason to put the whole of London into Tier Three. I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

The Tehran Terror?

If Iran has a nuclear weapons programme, then it has the worst that there has ever been. It has been "18 months away" from the Bomb for at least 20 years.

The people who are pushing for this war have been stone cold liars about absolutely everything else. That is just what they are. I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Fired Up

And so we return to coal. What a thing it is to have been right all along.

I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Oliver Kamm Candidacy Watch: Day Four

Tiers Into The Thames

Of course London is in Tier Two. Much of it is a plague pit, but anything other than a formula that kept it out of Tier Three would have meant keeping the national lockdown.

As soon as the reality of London had once again become impossible to ignore, then there would once again be a return to what many of us had come to regard as normal life.

Break The Rules

Any Brexit deal that kept Britain subject in any way to the EU's State Aid rules would deserve to be rejected by the House of Commons.

It won't be. But it should be.

I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Ambushed, Indeed

The murder of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh is intended to provoke a response. Or, as it might otherwise be termed, a war.

And who would keep Britain out of that war? Keir Starmer? Ed Davey? Well, there you are, then.

I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Maps of Meaning, Rules for Life

Why does anyone care either way about Jordan Peterson? Does anyone really care either way about Jordan Peterson?

It is 21 years since Maps of Meaning, and 12 Rules for Life is a glorified self-help manual, if it is that.

Pop stars have very limited shelf lives, and he is well past his. It is not just that his fans need to grow up. By now, most of them have.

Spare Me Your Tiers

Whingeing, whining and moaning from places that have been put into Tier Three, while some of us have been under what has amounted to a lockdown for months on end. This is like the annual hysteria over the lightest dusting of snow for a day or two in the South.

Labour is just playing games. If anything, then it will whip to abstain, as it did over the Hostile Environment, over the benefit cap (whereas it went so far as to vote in favour of the welfare cap), over the retrospective legalisation of workfare, over the 10pm curfew, over the legalisation of torture abroad, and over the empowerment of, for example, the Food Standards Agency to authorise murder at home. On those last two, it intends to abstain again.

But watch out for the Liberal Democrats. If they voted against the Government while Labour abstained, or even if they just abstained while Labour voted with the Government, then the Redcar Strategy would have begun. In 2010, after the Labour Government and the Conservative Opposition had both said that there was nothing that they could do to save the Redcar steelworks, then the Lib Dems took the parliamentary seat with the biggest General Election swing since the War. Over a much wider area, there may very well turn out to be a market again for Neither of the Above.

Yet who are the Lib Dems? For all their claims to have been a moderating influence in the Coalition, the opposite was true. The austerity programme was abandoned, or at least greatly moderated, when the Lib Dems stopped being in government. Not a single Lib Dem MP voted against the war in Libya. Fiscal and military hawkishness are both very Whiggish and Gladstonian, even if they are difficult to reconcile with each other. I am the Independent candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?

Oliver Kamm Candidacy Watch: Day Three

Oliver Kamm, you consider that Richard Holden, Laura Pidcock and I are all unfit to be Members of Parliament.

In that case, then you need to announce your own parliamentary candidacy here at North West Durham.

Put up or shut up. This post will appear daily until you do.

The Pidcock-Starmer Challenge: Day 12

Suicide Watch: Day 34

CPS Watch: Day 34

Clergy Watch: Day 53

Oliver Kamm Arrest Watch: Day 113

There is more evidence to arrest Oliver Kamm than there was to convict me, and he clams up over on Guido Fawkes when asked whether or not he has been arrested. So, has Oliver Kamm been arrested? If not, why not?

Kamm faked a death threat against himself, and he used a contact at Durham, who ought also to be arrested and who may in fact have been so, to try and pin it on me. That incident is so similar to the one of which I was convicted as to call into question my conviction. A daily update will appear here until further notice.

Oliver Kamm Libel Watch: Day 144

Britain Needs A Voting Rights Act

Not On Borrowed Time

The National Infrastructure Bank is an excellent idea, and it shows that Rishi Sunak knows why the public sector pay freeze is an economically illiterate piece of political opportunism.

The freeze is designed to placate the knuckle-draggers in his own party and in its pre-2019 electorate, while in fact devastating demand during a recession. That was a predictable and predicted disaster 10 years ago, and it will be a predictable and predicted disaster again.

Not one penny piece is being "borrowed", or ever needs to be. The State's printing of money for the State is not lending. Nothing is ever going to be paid back. Paid back how, exactly? Paid back to whom?

Through the National Infrastructure Bank, or a National Investment Bank, or both, the State ought to lend money directly to businesses, at very low rates of interest and to be repaid over a very long term. In fact, it may as well just give it to them, as it should give money directly to potential customers through public sector pay and through the Universal Basic Income.

At one stroke, the State could pay off every penny that it already owed. A sovereign state with its own free floating, fiat currency has as much of that currency as it chooses to issue to itself, as the present Government is demonstrating on a scale that is startling even by the usual standards of these things.

It also has readily available fiscal and monetary means of controlling any inflationary effects. Those means therefore need to be under democratic political control, and the reversal of the Blair Government's electorally unwarranted surrender of such control over monetary policy now looks like a formality, since a truly independent Bank of England would simply have said no to this latest "lending".

The public sector pay freeze is a particularly hard assault on the areas that have already suffered the most under the iniquitous tier system that has now been restored, but where the Conservative Party now has to hold onto 70 or so highly marginal seats. Here, the national pay scales of the public sector maintain a middle class that the local private sector wage market could never begin to deliver.

Most of the direct beneficiaries are Labour voters, but their spending power is the backbone of the local economies that employ the people whose votes turned the Red Wall Blue, and could just as easily turn it back again even if only by abstention, since the public sector middle class is going to turn out in force for Keir Starmer next time.

Still, the National Infrastructure Bank, and the effective reassertion of considerable control over the Bank of England, are steps in the right direction. Onwards to the strict Glass-Steagall statutory division between investment banking and retail banking, to pro-business tariffs and subsidies, and to a pro-business National Investment Bank to promote the growth of productive enterprises rather than speculation.

Onwards to collective bargaining and trade union representation, to cooperative and mutual ownership, to the Universal Basic Income, to the Jobs Guarantee, and to reconceived models of public ownership as another means of getting money into the hands of the people who would spend it, all in the context of an economic realignment with the BRICS and with the other emerging economies.

And let there be absolutely no suggestion of remaining subject to the State Aid rules, or indeed to any other feature of the European Single Market or the Customs Union. I am the Independent candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election. What are you doing?

A Hostile Environment?

Boris Johnson was not in Parliament when it passed the Immigration Act 2014, which gave effect to the Hostile Environment policy that, having caused the Windrush scandal, has been found to have been unlawful. There are three things that he should now say about it.

First, it was a Coalition measure, so the Liberal Democrats voted in favour of it. They had three rebels, but there were far more of them in those days, and indeed their present Leader was in the Cabinet.

Secondly, all of six Labour MPs voted against it, three of those are no longer in Parliament, and one of the other three no longer has the whip because of criticism by the same Equality and Human Rights Commission that has published this blistering report.

And thirdly, the Cabinet Minister who introduced this legislation was the then Home Secretary, Theresa May. She has been proving bothersome to Johnson of late. But if Jeremy Corbyn cannot have the Labour whip because of criticism by the EHRC, then why should May have the Conservative whip after having been so criticised?

Oliver Kamm Candidacy Watch: Day Two

Oliver Kamm, you consider that Richard Holden, Laura Pidcock and I are all unfit to be Members of Parliament.

Oliver Kamm Candidacy Watch: Day One

Oliver Kamm, you consider that Richard Holden, Laura Pidcock and I are all unfit to be Members of Parliament.

In that case, then you need to announce your own parliamentary candidacy here at North West Durham.

Put up or shut up. This post will appear daily until you do.

A Shameful Stain

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has found that the Hostile Environment policy that led to the Windrush scandal was unlawful. With three exceptions, everyone who was a Labour MP in 2014 and who is still serving failed to vote against that year's Immigration Act, which caused this problem.

The three were Diane Abbott, John McDonnell, and, you've guessed it, Jeremy Corbyn. When is Keir Starmer, who did not enter Parliament until 2015, going to suspend every remaining Labour MP from 2014 apart from those three? Why has he not already done so?

The public revulsion at the Windrush scandal was a prelude to next year's census returns, which are going to tell us what we already knew, that there is certainly no all-white town in the United Kingdom, that there is probably no all-white village at least in Great Britain, that this is the Britain that almost everyone prefers, and that this is the only Britain that the half of the population under 40 can remember.

Any party led by Starmer is unworthy of the support of the Black Wall, and everywhere is now on the Black Wall. I am an Independent candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election. What are you doing?

Open Society?

Blink and you will miss it, but Suzanne Moore blames George Soros for getting her sacked from The Guardian, which he funds.

Strategy Briefing

I have seen some political hypocrisy in my time. Indeed, I am quite the connoisseur of it. But nothing else comes close to the affected concern of the Labour Right that a public sector pay freeze may be detrimental to the interests of Teaching Assistants. In that interest, I have worked closely and proudly with, among other people, the Liberal Democrats.

But I do not know how I had never thought of this before. The Lib Dems will argue that "the only alternative was No Deal", and then vote for Boris Johnson's Brexit deal, or at the very least not vote against it. Their backs thus covered, they will begin in earnest, along the Red Wall and throughout the newly competitive Labour seats that surrounded it, to give effect to the Redcar Strategy.

They will seek to repeat, across a much wider area, their success in capturing the parliamentary seat of Redcar in 2010 after Labour had failed to save its steelworks while the Conservatives had also insisted that there was nothing that they could have done. The Lib Dems were fully signed up to the same ideology; in fact, they were the only party with no wing opposed to it. But that was beside the point. It was the Big Two that had actually betrayed the people of Redcar.

Today, the Lib Dems are fully signed up to the same ideology as Keir Starmer and Princess Nut Nuts; in fact, they are the only party with no wing opposed to it. But that could be beside the point. It would be the Big Two that had actually betrayed the voters of the Red Wall and of the newly competitive Labour seats that surrounded it.

Starmer seems to be resolved to head off the Lib Dems at the pass by also having voted for Boris Johnson's Brexit deal, or at the very least by not having voting against it. And we are back to political hypocrisy. But I am an Independent candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election. What are you doing?

The Pidcock-Starmer Challenge: Day 10

The Last Man In The Field?

I am not aware that he has ever been to North West Durham, but Oliver Kamm has now decided that he has a problem with at least three candidates here at the next General Election, namely Richard Holden, Laura Pidcock, and me. This really is put up or shut up time.

Kamm would be the last man in the field for Change UK, the party that Hilary Armstrong's preferred successor in 2010 would have joined in February 2019. Without that all-women shortlist 10 years ago, then Labour would have lost this seat even earlier than it did.

Yellow Round The Edges?

What was once Mo Mowlam's seat has been represented by all three parties in the last 10 years. In 2010, when the Labour Government failed to do anything for the Redcar steelworks while the Conservatives also shrugged their shoulders on the grounds that "You can't buck the market", then Redcar elected a Liberal Democrat MP with a 21.8 per cent swing. That remains the largest swing in England at a General Election, rather than at a by-election, since the Second World War.

Today, Keir Starmer has hinted that Labour might vote in favour of the Government's Brexit deal, a deal that he has not seen because it is still being negotiated. Starmer has form here. He promised to implement the EHRC report in full while that was still being written, too. And this time, I expect him to conform to type again, by whipping an abstention. But Labour will not appear to vote against Getting Brexit Done.

That brings us back to Redcar, which is now a Red Wall seat. The Lib Dems were fully in favour of the EU State Aid rules that precluded any Labour bailout of the steelworks as if it had been a bank, and the 2010 Election at which they took the seat took them into government with George Osborne. They are going to vote against any Brexit deal, out of implacable opposition to Brexit itself. Or are they?

I have worked with the Lib Dems on matters of shared principle. But as a party, they survive by picking up support based, not on who or what they are, but on who and what they are not. Normally, that is against one of the Big Two, with a sideline against the other one. But occasionally, as at Redcar, it is against both of them with full force.

Now that Labour and the Conservatives have both decided to revert to being neoliberal and neoconservative, woke and Green, upper-middle-class and Southern, then the Lib Dems plan on hitting both of them equally hard all along the Red Wall, and in the neighbouring seats that stayed Labour last time by much narrower margins than hitherto.

Starmer is not prepared to give them a helping hand by having voted against Brexit. He knows that their answer to "So did you" would be "But that was the wrong Brexit", followed by lots of local detail. Or that in fact they had not done so. But he is never going to be able to cajole most of his own MPs into voting in favour of it, either. I am an Independent candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election. What are you doing?

Credit Worthy

This year has probably marked the end of the practice of signing on. The system has worked perfectly well without it.

But there could be none of this Universal Credit fraud if we had the Universal Basic Income. It is no wonder that Richard Nixon and Milton Friedman were so keen on it.

I am an Independent candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election. What are you doing?

Crystal Balls

So successfully have we improved Afghanistan, the source of more than half the world's heroin, that it has now moved into methamphetamine.

But never fear. Tony Blinken is on his way.

I am an Independent candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election. What are you doing?
