Status Anxiety

It is not about Hilary Benn's father. He is wrong because he is wrong, and bringing the old man into it is just a distraction.

But it was about Tony Blair's wife.

In his early days, it was a comedy commonplace that he lived on pocket money from her.

Remember that they were no Millennials, nor even members of Generation X.

After the Iraq War, however, he rakes in quite considerably more than she does.

What, then, of the fabulously rich David Cameron? What is his motivation?

It is not money, which he has never lacked. It is not power, of which he now has more than he will ever have again.

Rather, it is status.

He intends to leave office in his very early fifties, which is no age these days, and there are only so many ultra-high status positions in the world.

Any one of the Americans, the Russians and the French could probably block his appointment to such a position.

Any two certainly could, especially if they were backed up in that view by the Gulf monarchs.

If they felt that he had not done his bit in Syria, then they would have no hesitation in freezing him out.

Therefore, here we are.
