Darker Than Underground

“We are still importing 40 million tonnes of coal and have the capacity to operate 20 or 30 pits in this country while using coal cleanly with carbon capture. It is disgraceful to throw 450 miners out of work in this way before Christmas.”

So says Dennis Skinner, and of course he is right.

“Farewell to the aristocracy of the working class” means farewell to proper wages, secured and defended by strong trade unions.

Meanwhile, we shall continue to go to war for oil, and to import vast quantities of coal from child and slave labour at the ends of the earth.

  1. The coal will still be mined, but in countries with almost no environmental legislation and with atrocious working conditions. The British miners' jobs will be replaced with Sports Direct.

  2. I'm looking forward to Hitchens on Sunday. He'll have something to say about this.
