The 45p Question

Does this mean 90p a pint in Scotland?

The only people who would ever drink this stuff are the people who would steal, go without food, or do whatever else it took to pay whatever price was charged for it. Minimum pricing may have a place, but it is not in itself any sort of solution. And why should those of us who only drink the good stuff, and who are willing and able (indeed, glad) to make it last, have to pay even more for it because of people who consume industrial quantities of whatever it is that is sold at 45p per unit? Or, as things stand, apparently at even less than that.

  1. Unsurprisingly, you have wilfully understood this policy, or else you simply cannot understand it. Let me enlighten you. Problem drinking is a function of cheap, strong alcohol bought in off licences. This policy will double or treble the price of this alcohol. Indeed, as deep discounting through bulk buying will also become illegal, it will push up the price of some beer and cider by an order of magnitude. Good quality alcohol and alcohol consumed under the supervision of licencees, both already above 45p per unit, will be unaffected. The medical profession, the police and the pubs are in favour. Labour aren't because it's an SNP policy and for no other reason at all.

  2. Enjoy permanent Opposition. Does the SNP have a death wish?
