Pre-Settled Status

Of course the EU settlement scheme is unlawful. That is what it is for. Like the Rwanda deportation scheme, it is designed to provoke a fight about tofu or something. It is not supposed to happen.

The Government is going to have to come up with another excuse for not sending anyone to Rwanda, which there is absolutely no practical plan to do. But on abrogating the right of permanent residence, the High Court has spared it the trouble.

Why does no one ever ask how all these obstacles could still exist after 12 years of Conservative Government, with Home Secretaries this year alone including, but not restricted to, Priti Patel and, twice, Suella Braverman? Why not, indeed?

  1. I’m proud that as a law-governed country we abide by our court rulings unlike say France (which deported Islamists in defiance of the ECHR). Yet I disagree that it’s designed not to happen as the government has staked its credibility on both policies happening. But the simple reason is that in leaving the EU we didn’t also leave the European Convention on Human Rights as Braverman wants to and as the Right has always called for. It prevents us enacting any rightwing policies.

    1. You could fooled on the receiving end of those policies.

Even if the opponents of the Rwanda flights won on appeal, then no plane would ever take off. Like the EU settlement scheme, on which any Government appeal would be strictly pro forma, anyone waiting for that has missed the point.

  2. You last paragraph is unanswerable, they've had long enough to remove these obstacles, they want to keep them there.

    1. How else are they to rally the troops? It is certainly not going to be with economic prosperity.

What obstacles? The court has just ruled the policy is legal in case you missed it.

    1. The judicial process has not yet been exhausted. But in any event, come back when a flight has touched down in Rwanda.

This is post is primarily about the the EU settlement scheme, which is unlawful because of course it is. That is what it is for. If this sort of thing ever really happened, then what reason would people like have to carry on voting Tory?

  4. The government is rapidly removing illegal migrants to Albania, as the court rules deportations to Rwanda are also legal. What is immoral about any of this? If illegal migrants don’t like Rwanda (or indeed Albania) they have the choice to stay in France…

    The policy is perfectly moral.
