Supposing Him To Be The Gardener?

The difference in reporting is striking. In Spain and Italy, it is Armageddon to the British media. But in Britain, comparable figures, soon to be worse, are dressed up in "Blitz spirit". People of my father's generation, who had served in the War, never talked about it like that.

Still, as Boris Johnson rises again on Easter Sunday, the National Health Service once and for all replaces the Second World War as the national religion. The monarchy, the Conservative Party and the Church of England used to protect their social and cultural position, and also their political position in the party's case, by associating themselves with the War.

Now, they do so by associating themselves with the NHS. Within the next few days, the Armed Forces will make the same transition. Only the dying Labour Party of Keir Starmer holds to the Old Faith of monetarism, and neoliberalism, and privatisation.

But the Budget of March 2020, and the Government's response to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, have ended the era that began with the Budget of December 1976. Only the party of the 1976 Budget still wishes to live in that era, and it is easily on course to take practically no votes at all next time. The Centre is the think tank for this new era. Please give generously.
