As I predicted last night, the Armed Forces are shoring up their political position by redefining themselves as ancillaries of the National Health Service. The uniforms, and the ranks, and what have you, may now been seen as the kind of historical curiosities that were featured on The One Show.
The Ministry of Defence has chosen to become one of those state-funded charities, albeit by far the largest, of which there came to be a lot more last week, and many of which also exist to serve the NHS. "Fight a war? What do you mean, fight a war? Who would do the delivery driving for the Health Service, which is what you pay us for, as we have the medals to prove?" Happy days.
In recent days, the monarchy, the churches, the Conservative Party, and Boris Johnson himself, have all successfully deployed much the same strategy. The Police might usefully do so. As, although it gives me no pleasure to say it, might the American bases. The Centre is the think tank for this new era. Please give generously.
