Race For The White House

If you say a racist thing, then you are a racist. You are not necessarily David Duke. But you are a racist. All of the House Democrats and four of the House Republicans have already accepted that, therefore, Donald Trump is a racist.

But in voting to impeach him on that basis, only 95 of the House Democrats and none of the House Republicans believe that that racism constitutes a disqualification from the office of President of the United States.

The impeachment would have failed in the Senate. And these things ought to be judged by the voters, anyway. But America does choose to have this procedure, and the success of a motion pursuant to it would have made a point.

Instead, though, quite a different point has been made. Racism is regrettable, in the way that bad table manners are regrettable. But one may still be the President of the United States and have bad table manners. And one may still be the President of the United States and be a racist.

Step forward, Joe Biden.
