Plus C'est La Même Chose

Like everyone else, I am laughing at Dominic Chappell's "Bouquet" pronunciation of his name.

But it shows quite how profound the Norman Conquest will always be in the English-speaking world.

There will always, always be a cultural cringe to France, a sense that France is the original and superior civilisation of which this is fundamentally just a colony.

If you do not believe me, then ask yourself whether there is any other language in which merely pronouncing one's name as if it were French were the way, however cackhanded, of making that name and its owner sound posher or more sophisticated.
