In Through The Out Door

On Christmas Day, BBC World News intends to broadcast Jimmy Page In Conversation.

But will the subject be at liberty by 25th December? He once, in a different time, openly had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Still a year older than one of Bill Wyman's girlfriends, of course.

Gary Glitter was hugely popular in his day. But he was a highly derivative act. He can be written out of the history of rock'n'roll without anyone's really noticing.

That cannot be said of the Rolling Stones, whose material from the 31 Wyman years is still being played by radio stations that would never now play anything by Gary Glitter. Nor can it be said of Led Zeppelin.

This problem of good art/music being made by bad people is not new. The prospect that the only music available in paradise might be Elgar and Cliff Richard is a sobering one!
