Process Error

I have no doubt that Save The Children is right about malnutrition in this country. But I genuinely do not understand why, or even how, the very poor would turn to processed food rather than fresh ingredients. Processed food cannot possibly be cheaper than fresh ingredients. Can it? If so, then how, exactly?
