My uncle used to tell the story of how various small councils angry at being abolished when Strathclyde was set up hid their regalia in all sorts of unlikely places in order to prevent their being moved to, and worn in, Glasgow. One set turned up on The Antiques Roadshow.
Anyway, encased in glass alongside the stairs leading up to the Derwentside District Council Chamber hung a very good example of The Perfect Craftsman, a traditional trade union banner depicting the adolescent Jesus apprenticed in Saint Joseph’s carpenter’s shop. How everything in that sentence speaks of what has been stolen from us.
I trust, though, that that banner, which belonged to a dear and now deceased friend and mentor of mine, has not been stolen. Does anyone happen to know where it has gone, and that it is safe? Very many thanks.
