Mind Your Grammar

The Mail on Sunday’s Black Dog is tickled that Labour MPs – yes, Labour MPs! – attended a function celebrating grammar schools, at which the guest of honour was Margaret Thatcher.

But the real question is what on earth she was doing there. As Education Secretary, she closed so many grammar schools that there were not enough left at the end for her record ever to be equalled. While she (or John Major) was Prime Minister, not a single grammar school reopened. And her party, which still lionises her, recently voted in favour of a Government Bill to ban the creation of any more.
