I for one am pleased to hear from Tony Blair today. In his way, he is as obviously running in 2024 as Donald Trump is. Based on the fact that he won three uncontested General Elections a thousand years ago, as if anybody still cared.
2024 is also going to be an uncontested General Election. The nearest thing that Britain has ever had to a Bennite Government is taking the opportunity of Brexit to invest massively in the areas that had been devastated by Thatcherism, and to pursue an independent, peaceable foreign policy.
That Government is going to wipe the floor with an Opposition that believed in permanent austerity at home and in forever war abroad, regardless of economic or geopolitical circumstances. But that Opposition will be requiring a candidate at Sedgefield. Put or shut up, Blair. Put up or shut up.
This is shaping up to be the most interesting General Election since 1945.
