National Service, says Rory Stewart. "Universal - for every young person. Purpose. Character. Coming together across the United Kingdom."
He sounds as if he is standing for Leader of Change UK. This one used to do the rounds a lot in the Blair years, like identity cards, or replacing benefits with vouchers that could have been redeemed only for State-approved products and only in State-approved shops. Watch out for those two next, among others, in the race to lead the Blairite Conservative Party.

Stewart knows that that cannot mean military service, which would cause the operational efficiency of our professional, all-volunteer Armed Forces to collapse. So he must mean litter-picking and what have you. Or else things that, if they are there to be done, ought to be someone's properly paid job, with employment rights protected by trade unions. Probably, he means some combination of the two.
But what if people still refused to do it? As, frankly, most of today's youth would do. They would just say no, followed by, "What are you going to do, put us all in prison?" There would be no answer to that. And then there would be the endless "deferments" for university, generally exempting the more affluent half of each cohort.
Another hung Parliament is coming, however, we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party will be registered before House of Commons rises for the summer recess, even if I have to pay for it myself, ongoing lawfare or no ongoing lawfare. And I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham even if I can raise only the deposit, which I could do by going pretty overdrawn, although that was not how I was brought up. I would still prefer to raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign, but I am no longer making my candidacy conditional on having done so. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.

Rory Stewart, the no-hoper, can have a laugh with policies he’ll never be able to implement. The odds on the Loch Ness Monster being discovered are greater than those of his becoming Tory leader. Corbyn knows.
ReplyDelete“”Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "I don't know who the new Conservative leader is going to be, but it seems to be a choice between no deal, no deal and no deal, as far as I can understand it."
Even Michael Gove is chasing Rory Stewart today. It will only be a Brexiteer if the MPs include one in the final two. Think on.
DeleteCalls for national service, like ID cards, are a consequence of mass legal and illegal immigration and the consequent need to forge a new national identity. I preferred the old national identity based on a common language and culture rather than a French style one based on national ID cards and national service.
ReplyDeleteBut that’s gone now, thanks to the Blairite Left’s project of mass immigration to “rub the Right’s nose in diversity.”
They have both been doing the rounds for as long as I can remember (the Thatcher and Major Governments used to flirt with them, too), which is long before you were born.
DeleteHow did Tommy Robinson do at the polls, by the way? Or even UKIP?
