I was asked this only today, in relation to Pope Francis and the Falkland Islands.
At the time of German reunification, one of the big issues was that, whereas East Germany had long before signed a treaty recognising the western border of Poland, West Germany had never done so. Chancellor Kohl used to talk about "West Prussia", as if there were an East Prussia. There was much discussion within his party of compensation, rights of return, and so on.
Did John Paul II ever say a word? Not so far as I am aware. He must have had a view. We may safely guess what that view must have been. But he kept it to himself. As will Pope Francis.
