As Dominic Cummings walks out, Boris Johnson is preparing to sign a deal that would be even worse than re-joining the EU. He knows that most Conservative MPs would vote for whatever any Conservative Prime Minister had put in front of them, while most Labour MPs and all Liberal Democrat, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Green, SDLP and Alliance Party ones would at least not vote against such an obvious stepping stone to reaccession.
Reaccession would of course be on whatever terms that the EU cared to set. Schengen, the euro, the lot. Johnson has never really been one of us. Never. But I am a declared and active candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham at the next General Election. Please give generously. Laugh all you like at the bathos of that juxtaposition, but no one is offering you anything better.
