Arrest Your Thinking, Then Charge It

I have every sympathy with Sir Cliff Richard, who has never been arrested. There is a strong case for not naming people who have not been arrested.

But I have been arrested, and it got into the papers. The alternative to permitting that would be to become one of those countries in which people disappeared into Police Stations and their names were never mentioned again.

Nor should people remain anonymous until they have been charged. Not very long ago, this State wanted to be able to hold people for up to 90 days without charging them, and it has not given up on that kind of aspiration.
