Unguarded

The rage underneath The Guardian's editorial endorsing Yvette Cooper, and thus not endorsing Jeremy Corbyn, is a wonder to behold.

I am beginning to think that there might be something in my little musing on how, this time next year, the Morning Star will be selling more paper copies in Britain than The Guardian will be managing.

For that matter, the Daily Telegraph or even the Daily Mail could appoint six Corbynite columnists and allow them to write whatever the liked within the law and the English language, entitling that daily feature "Comment Is Free".

On the basis of that feature's existence, that paper might then pitch to trade unions, Labour councils, leftish Third Sector bodies, and so on, to run their advertising. And that at what the Mail, at least, could afford to make a very competitive rate indeed.

The rest of the paper would be unchanged, but it would really be very difficult for a public or charitable body to turn down an offer like that. It might even be illegal. And the Corbynite columns would be printed, so what's not to like?

Tomorrow's endorsement of Andy Burnham by the Daily Mirror is not going to go down well, either.

Who is going to seize these initiatives?
