Soft Power?

William Shawcross has just admitted that he cannot investigate Richard Sharp because they are mates. Honestly, you would think that Britain were some remote microstate, rather than a country of around 70 million people.

In fact, it turns out that Boris Johnson shortlisted Sam Blyth for CEO of the British Council. Although Blyth is not even one of the 70 million, not only is he Johnson's cousin, with one of Johnson's brothers on the board of one of his companies, but while Johnson was Prime Minister, then he gave him an interest free, apparently non-repayable "credit facility" of £800,000.

Negotiated by Sharp. Who was also Rishi Sunak's manager at Goldman Sachs. While Shawcross's daughter is now the Head of Sunak's Policy Unit. What a small world.

  1. MPs have passed a law mandating minimum service levels for essential public services. Good. If trade unions are upset about this, they caused it. As Peter Hitchens said on Question Time, the whole concept of nurses and ambulance teams “going on strike” is disgusting: the unChristian withdrawal of mercy to the sick and dying. If they hadn’t done such a shameful thing, this law wouldn’t be necessary.

    1. There will be no enforcement of this law. None. You read it here first. Even Jacob Rees-Mogg has just described it as "not urgent legislation".
