Aditya Chakrabortty has the latest from Haringey, a jewel in the right-wing Labour crown that shines almost as brightly as Durham does. This time, the Council that wanted to bulldoze Tottenham in order to build an all-white gated community on top of it is trying to demolish its Latin Market in much the same cause.
The right-wing Labour machine is in the process of crowning Keir Starmer of the Trilateral Commission, with its concerns about "an excess of democracy". But that machine assumes that it will always keep its grip on BAME London. Labour could have survived the loss of the Red Wall, or it could have survived the loss of the Black Wall, but the people who control it do not even entertain the possibly that it might lose both. Well, they never used to entertain the possibility that they might lose either.
Here along the old Red Wall, we have no intention of merely exchanging one one-party state for another. The Conservatives must face the competition in which they profess to believe, and Labour, which stands no chance of ever again winning an overall majority, must be made to know that it will only ever return to office on our terms.
Therefore, ours is the 2020 Vision of a new political party, a new think tank, a new weekly newspaper, a new fortnightly satirical magazine, a new monthly cultural review, a new quarterly academic journal, and so much else besides. But what is the 2020 Vision along what looks as if it might be starting to become the old Black Wall? You would have to ask them there. But I look forward to finding out.
I will be standing for Parliament again here at North West Durham next time, so please give generously. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
