They have not been this angry since Humanae Vitae. And unlike then, the same individuals, but 50 years older, cannot simply disregard Querida Amazonia.
In simply disregarding Humanae Vitae, they have caused themselves to be outbred by the people who have not, because God is not mocked. And if they are not going to get the ordination of women out of this Pope, then they are just not going to get it. Well, of course they aren't. They never were.
An ordination ceremony performed to the letter on a woman, even by the Pope, would never have any sacramental effect. Possibly any Pope who professed himself in favour of such a thing, and certainly any who acted on it, would be ipso facto deposed for heresy. A successor would be elected, and that would be that.
Ordination is ordination. If women cannot be bishops, then they cannot be deacons. And no, they never were. They are all going to be coming out of the woodwork this week, the Galatians 3:28 nutters, the “early Christians just elected a Eucharistic celebrant on the spot” nutters, the “women priests in the catacombs” nutters, the “Pope Joan” nutters, the “Mary Priest” nutters (whom aspects of traditionalism curiously indulge), and all the rest of the nutters. All with grand academic titles, because that is how you get grand academic titles. Are we supposed to be impressed?
As for the non-theological non-argument that there would be more clergy if women were ordained, it is the mirror of the non-theological non-argument (and non-fact) that “the Latin Mass was the same everywhere”, and the new Vicar of Lanchester is a woman, with three churches that 30 years ago had a man each, including my late father. They have one woman among all of them, while a fourth church that she would otherwise have had has closed. None of this is not her fault, but it is the way that things are.
