Of course the Lib Dems are now an uncomplicatedly right-wing party.
And of course UKIP is now to the left of the Conservatives.
Therefore, UKIP is also to the left of the Lib Dems.
The Conservatives and the Lib Dems are to the right of a party neither of whose MPs voted today to save the English firemen's pensions.
Yes, there certainly is still a left-right split. Yes, it certainly is still about economics. No, that is not the only thing in politics. But then, it never has been.

This posting reminded me of the Johnny Cash song which was entitled 'The one on the right is on the left'. It was about a newly-formed folk band. These are just some of the lyrics.
ReplyDelete'Folks thought they would go far
But political incompatibility led to their downfall
Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the right
And the one on the left was in the middle
And the guy in the rear was a Methodist
This musical aggregation toured the entire nation
Singing the traditional ballads
And the folk songs of our land
They performed with great virtuosity
And soon they were the rage
But political animosity prevailed upon the stage
Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the right
And the one on the left was in the middle
And the guy in the rear burned his driver's license.'
If anyone is interested it can be seen on Youtube. It would be entertaining to see Cameron, Miliband, Clegg, and Farage forming a band. How about 'The Misfits?'
