Following the very welcome news from the G7, Manchester Gorton is the most important British parliamentary by-election since the nineteenth century.
Against a candidate of the pro-war Lib Dems, and against an anti-Corbyn Labour candidate, the return of George Galloway to the House of Commons would be heard in the White House and the Kremlin, in Ankara and Damascus, in Riyadh and Tehran.
It may be enough to keep Britain out of a catastrophic intervention in the Syrian Civil War. It would certainly make a significant contribution to that cause.
A cause led, as ever, by the Left. Right-wing anti-interventionism is tolerated as an eccentricity among newspaper columnists. But it is not even that among politicians, where in any case it almost never occurs.
Drop in daily at 12 noon to 16 Albert Road, Levenshulme, Manchester, M19 3PJ. Or email GG4GORTON@gmail.com.
