Among people who knew what they were talking about, there was never any suggestion that EU nationals who were already here were going to be kicked out if we left the EU.
But that is academic. We have not left the EU, and there is no sign that we are ever going to leave the EU.
"No Article 50 this year," says Theresa May, the Remainer whom the Conservative Party elected unopposed.
But any later than that, and she would maintain that a second referendum was necessary.
The nation would scream for mercy, as it was pretty much doing by the time that the first one finally arrived. No such affliction would ever be visited.
And that would be that.
