A Load of Balkans

This afternoon, in a programme on this year's fiftieth anniversary of the independence of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Radio Four informed us that Patrice Lumumba had sought and obtained "Serbian" assistance.

No one must ever know that there was once a multinational state (its President at the time under discussion was a Croat) called Yugoslavia, a state with many faults, but nevertheless a bulwark both against Soviet hegemony, and against the global capitalism and the Islamist expansionism, both shot through with nostalgia for Nazism, that jointly overthrew and dismembered Yugoslavia, a joint dismemberment which remains an ongoing process even an entire generation later.
