On The Progressive Side of Politics

Senator Doug Cameron may have a point about the rigidity of the caucus system. But he might care to note that Barack Obama also believes that marriage can only ever be the union of one man and one woman. Voters in Florida and California reaffirmed that on the same day as they gave him their Electoral College votes.

As for "the conservative Catholic Irish tradition" that I am told is behind the ALP's stand on this issue, the ALP was a lot further to the Left economically when it was like that, just as its near-namesake over here was, and people like that have not gone away, having in fact been augmented by later immigrants of various provenances.

The DLP won a Senate seat in Victoria this time, and that should move the ALP a lot more, both on social and on economic issues, than the flirtations with the Greens of a few affluent, ageing student Trots. Clearly, it does.

With the "conservative Catholic Irish tradition" going DLP as the caffè latte 68ers go Green, might the ALP's days be numbered?
