David Cameron's Incapacity

Knocking down a quarter of a million, or even half a million, people from Incapacity Benefit to JSA would save a negligible amount of money, even if it could be done. And while it seems to have escaped Cameron's notice, there are in any case no jobs to seek. But no wonder that he has promised the Cabinet seat on this to its former occupant, James Purnell. Like Purnell, he is making a reputation for himself as the man who kicks people out of their sick beds or their wheelchairs and stamps on their heads.

  1. Yes but surely "welfare" is a Tory touchstone issue. It plays well to the gallery. The biggest scroungers are of course tax dodgers and the folks who fake their accounts so that their offspring get grants/loans to Uni.
In the Tory mindset welfare scrounging is wrong but tax dodging is a cause for boasting in the Golf Club.

  2. Well, indeed.

But Incapacity Benefit was invented by Margaret Thatcher, in order to massage the unemployment figures. Funny how they are not mentioning that.

  3. I have the strange feeling that Thatcher will die before the Election.
Not sure if that will have a positive or negative effect on the Tory campaign ...probably positive.

All that nostalgia about good old Maggie will be released. But also the Tories are desperately distancing themselves from Thatcherism.

A chill went down my spine last week when I saw an old interview with Jill Knight.

  4. No Helen Brooks letter in the Times in February 1980. Bad luck. Try checking your facts next time.

How's the BPA getting on? Attracted a member yet?

  5. Rather well, and no longer a membership organisation.

I suggest that you declare your identity so that Peter Hitchens, the proprietors and editors of the Mail on Sunday, and the proprietors and editors of the publishers of 'The Abolition of Britain', can all sue you.

    Now, back on topic, please.
