The Periphery No More

Mossad has knocked out a nuclear power station in Iran. Everyone knows that there is no Iranian nuclear weapons programme. But the point has been made. Even on trial while struggling to put together a coalition after his fourth General Election in two years, Benjamin Netanyahu is still very much here.

And to whom has that point been made? To his new best friends in the United Arab Emirates, in Bahrain, and therefore also in Saudi Arabia, plus others who might fancy joining the club. In 2008, while seeking the Democratic Party's nomination for President, Hillary Clinton openly promised to nuke Iran if so instructed by her campaign financiers in those bastions of feminism, the Gulf monarchies. Clinton never did become President.

But Netanyahu came back as Prime Minister the following year. And he is still there. Not only that, but he now needs to court Ra'am, who are Sunni Islamists right there in the Knesset itself. In their heart of hearts, the Shia are even worse than the Jews. Never bet against Netanyahu. He is an evil genius. But he is still a genius.
