"A suite of undergraduate degrees," says the University of Leicester. Ugh. Just ugh. Cuts are demanded by the neoliberal Right. Or fake Right, since it is certainly not interested in conserving anything. The identitarian fake Left obliges by cutting Chaucer and Beowulf.
As if there were not the room for other texts alongside those. Or as if their removal would achieve a damn thing for economic equality and international peace, to which anti-racism and anti-imperialism are indeed integral, and vice versa. Sacking people is not an obvious way of advancing that indivisible cause.
And of course, people whose parents could afford it would still be able to study Chaucer and Beowulf, among so very many other things. Yet the Great Books have always been fundamental to radical change. Ask the authors of many of the texts that are to replace them. In fact, we need to hear from those authors as a matter of the utmost urgency.
