Starmering On

Jeremy Corbyn's Constituency Labour Party at Islington North has nominated Keir Starmer for Leader of the Labour Party. Well, of course it has. His school may only have gone private while he was there, and his degree from Oxford may only have been his second degree, but he is going to have to do this time, as the most "Prime Ministerial" candidate available.

By the time of the next General Election, then it will have been 32 years since a General Election had been won outright by anyone who was not an Oxonian public schoolboy. The voters have delivered their verdict on upstarts from Rotherham, Swansea and Kirkcaldy; from South Yorkshire, South Wales and Fife, for those who understand the significance of that.

Their brilliant intellects only made the crime of their presumptuousness even worse. Where did they think they were? France? And of those three, only the first was young enough to have gone to a comprehensive, so let us have no talk of grammar schools. Ed Miliband had gone up to Oxford from Haverstock, which is not most people's idea of a typical comp. But David Cameron had gone up to Oxford from Eton. So there.

At only 758,224 votes behind a state educated woman, and that is before considering how few votes it would have taken to have changed the key marginal seats, then Labour with the same manifesto but with a "Prime Ministerial" Leader would have won in 2017. And the Islington North Constituency Labour Party knows that.

Not that it stands any chance of such a manifesto under Starmer. But not that that matters, as the size of the Conservative majority is such that Labour cannot win in 2024. After that, then the Leadership will go to an impeccably "Prime Ministerial" youth who had been brought into politics by Corbyn. They exist, and the arrangements are no doubt already being made.

You do not have to take any part is this. I will be standing for Parliament again here at North West Durham next time, so please give generously. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
