Dealing Themselves Out

And so Jacob Rees-Mogg and the DUP prepare to join David Davis and Esther McVey in voting for Theresa May's deal after all.

The only Conservative holdouts will be the people who can be seen in the same Division Lobby as each other, because they have no careers to wreck.

Several of those 50, possibly 30, and possibly even only 20 MPs will then be deselected. Several more would have retired, anyway.

And several of the rest will lose their seats, as the Conservative rebels over Maastricht were disproportionately likely to have done in 1997.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it.

It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post.

I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
