Yesterday morning, with almost as many people in the public gallery as on the largely deserted floor, Durham County Council duly shafted its Teaching Assistants again.
Alas, the latest Private Eye was waiting on the doormat yesterday, and not on Tuesday.
For, on page 18, and headed "Year Zero", this story leads the Rotten Boroughs page.
"Labour Durham County Council has a wizard wheeze to save millions of pounds a year, putting its Teaching Assistants on something alarmingly near to zero hours contracts."
But, as it concludes:
"Senior councillors have for years held meetings in a hospitality box at debt-ridden Durham County Cricket Club, which stays afloat thanks to a £3.7 million loan ... from the council. Trebles all round!"
