Subject: The Lisbon Treaty

I am writing to request that either or both of your parties put down an amendment which does not mention a referendum at all, but rather simply rejects the Lisbon Treaty because it transfers further legislative powers to a body which meets in secret and which publishes no Official Report, and because it fails to abolish the Common Fisheries Policy.

The first point would be a direct challenge to every MP with a Tory, Labour or Liberal bone in his or her body, and the second part would be a direct challenge at least to each and every MP from Scotland, Northern Ireland, the West Country or the East Coast: how could any such MP possibly vote against such an amendment?

Calling for a referendum which he knows is not going to happen is David Cameron's way of getting himself off the hook. He must not be allowed to succeed. A referendum is simply beside the point: this Treaty is objectionable in principle, with or without a referendum, and Parliament should reject it accordingly.

Very many thanks.

Yours sincerely,

David Lindsay

  1. David, it is impossible to see how this plan can fail. I confidently expect these amendments to be tabled, and to see news of this in all of the papers you have notified. If it doesn't happen, it shows they fear you.

  2. It's not intended to be in the media. It's intended to be known about by them. And I can assure you that it is.

Why would the SNP or the DUP NOT do this?

As much as anything else, it would kill off the Tories, whom neither has any cause to love, and whom each has much cause to loathe.

Cameron couldn't possibly tell his MPs to vote against this (and they'd just ignore him if he tried), he couldn't possibly tell them to vote for it, and he couldn't possibly tell them to abstain.

And the death of the Tories would be the death of the Labour Party, which would have no reason to exist without the Tory bogeyman. Again, nothing could be more attractive either to Alex Salmond or to Ian Paisley. So why not?
