Everyone is saying that the restricted Orange march at Drumcree would be over in a few minutes, but does that take into account the sheer age of today’s Orangemen? Yet on the steps of the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast with Mary-Lou McDonald and Michelle O’Neill was of course Breandán Mac Cionnaith, eternal face and voice of the Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition, and for many years General Secretary of Éirígí. So it is not that this could turn spicy. It already is.
The decision to allow this march has been denounced by Colum Eastwood, whose partner is Louise Haigh. As First Secretary of State, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and Minister for the Cabinet Office, Haigh is effectively the Deputy Prime Minister. In black tie last month, I toasted “The King, Duke of Lancaster” in Liverpool. Make what you will of the fact that the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster was cohabiting with an SDLP MP. Or of the fact that an SDLP MP was cohabiting with the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
