In comparing the King to a lottery winner, Earl Spencer is expressing the old aristocracy’s 300-year-old contempt for the Royal Family, although that does not really work now that the monarch is a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, the senior surviving branch of the 925-year-old House of Oldenburg. It is still foreign, though, and to that extent arriviste on these shores.
But it is also still the Royal Family. The Heir to the Throne’s phone calls are recorded, and if MI5 existed to do anything, then it exists to protect the Crown. Either King Charles or Charles Spencer is making a terrible mistake, and my money is on the man on my money. No, it is not very regal to reply to one of those books. But nor is it very noble to write one. And Michael Fawcett again? Is this a Greatest Hits album?
