Down With The Dictators?

The Americans are bombing IS in the Syria that they did so much to give to it. Someone still has to, I suppose, if Iran is going to be taken out. But is it? Between the monarchists and the PMOI/MEK, the blame game has already started. Even if the regime did fall, and perhaps even if the monarchy were formally restored, then that would be because, as I write, a General Monck was already at work somewhere in the Artesh or even in the Revolutionary Guard. Look who has been installed as President of Venezuela, with no elections timetabled, nor any immediate plan for María Corina Machado to return.

The Revolutionary Guard Corps has vast interests in energy, engineering, construction, shipbuilding, automation and telecommunications, and enormous influence over the bonyads, which are fabulously rich and economically pivotal religious charities. Someone would still have to run those things, and a limited number of people have the training or the experience. Who else could drill the oil for Donald Trump? That is how these things work. See the Eastern Bloc after 1989. See Austria, Japan and both Germanies after 1945.

Elon Musk's Starlink may be providing massive Iran with the coverage that it was curiously unable to provide to tiny Gaza, but Britain, Canada and Australia are banding together to ban his Twitter or X because of Grok. Yet they did nothing when Meta plastered Facebook and Instagram with advertisements for "nudify" deepfake apps. And Indonesia has just banned Grok alone, so that can be done. On both points, Keir Starmer, Anthony Albanese and Mark Carney, why not?
