Red Flag Alerts All Over The Place

And so ends the biggest funeral in history. Stretched over its several days and two countries, if anyone else has had a bigger sendoff, then who, exactly, was that?

Thus has the world said goodbye to the man without whom the black flag of IS would be flying over Damascus. The red flag of revenge has been hoisted over, well, pretty much everywhere that matters for the present purpose.

Did the millions turn out under compulsion? Mostly not, but what if they did? They would also turn out for war. Those who can mobilise for this, can mobilise for that.

The Iraqi Government had invited General Soleimani to Baghdad as it sought to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Donald Trump knew that, and has therefore committed the war crime of perfidy in luring Soleimani to his death in this way.

Today, as someone called Ben Wallace had little idea what to say, and as Boris Johnson failed to turn up, even Benjamin Netanyahu distanced even Israel from this act that will be infamous for thousands of years.

That act has been perpetrated to stop just enough neoconservative Republican Senators from voting with the Democrats to remove this impeached President from office. Yet this is an act for which he deserves to be impeached. Those who voted for Trump, over the alternative Republican candidates who are now praising him to the skies, have been betrayed.

The fight against IS has been damaged so badly, perhaps irreparably, by the murder of Qassem Soleimani, that all British forces should be withdrawn from Iraq forthwith, since the purpose of their presence no longer exists. In any case, we are going to need all hands to the pumps at home now.

Britain should also make it clear that no British territory was available for use in this war with Iran. Not the British sovereign bases on Cyprus. And not Diego Garcia, in relation to which the Chagossians should seize their moment to demand their homeland back in place of a base the use of which was now unconscionable to the sovereign authority over the land in question.

I will be standing for Parliament again here at North West Durham next time, so please give generously. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
