Priti Far Behind

Of all the strange things about Priti Patel's weird list of the terrorist organisations that include a minor German football club, perhaps the oddest of all is how many of the bodies on it are in fact controlled by one or other of the intelligence and security outfits, having in several cases been created by them.

Poor Priti never got the memo. A bog standard Conservative victory would have made possible the de facto criminalisation, and possibly even the de jure criminalisation, of any dissent from neoliberal economic policy and from neoconservative foreign policy, to match and to buttress the last decade's criminalisation of such views as that of Maya Forstater, which I proudly repeat:

"Sex is a biological fact, and is immutable. There are two sexes, male and female. Men and boys are male. Women and girls are female. It is impossible to change sex. These were until very recently understood as basic facts of life by almost everyone."

It is already illegal to say that. Next up will be any departure from the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism. Did you see Midnight Mass from Bethlehem? You will not see it this year, because by then it will be illegal to mention that anybody had lived in the Holy Land during the 18 centuries after the destruction of the Temple in AD 70. You can already be expelled from the Labour Party for doing so. The dear old Crown Prosecution Service is already treating it as a criminal offence, and it very soon will be.

But Patel's wider jihad against departure from the economic and foreign policy orthodoxy has been rather thrown into doubt by the changes to that orthodoxy itself. For this was not a bog standard Conservative victory. Boris Johnson knows that he will remain Prime Minister only if he retains the Red Wall seats that require the huge levels of State investment and preference that Brexit will make possible, as part of a Neither Brussels Nor Washington economic policy that can exist only in the closest connection to the Neither Brussels Nor Washington foreign policy that his approach to Iran has already begun to manifest.

Apart from the detail that he does not really believe in it, this has been advocated forever by numerous of what Patel has decided to classify, for that reason, as terrorist organisations. By her definition, Johnson is a terrorist. As, of course, am I. Durham County Council, a right-wing Labour citadel untroubled by the slightest doubts about either neoliberalism or neoconservatism, referred me under the Prevent Strategy as long ago as September, but I am sorry to say that I have heard nothing since.

Hey, ho, I will be standing for Parliament again here at North West Durham next time, so please give generously. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
